10 Human Foods That Are Harmful For Cats

Having cats as pet’s means you are in for a roller coaster ride of emotions, sentiments and a lot more! When your feline companion looks at you with its soulful eyes, there is no person whose heart won’t melt! It also applies to when it comes to feeding your cat. You, being a highly conscious pet lover would always look for highly balanced and nutritious diet, but your cat will always have its eyes on what you are eating. But, before you relent, it is important that you know which foods are not beneficial for your cat. Here is a list of 10 human foods that are harmful for cats.

Avoid foods that have onions in it when feeding your lovely cat as it is not at all suitable for the health of your companion. Onions contain disulfides and suloxides that are responsible for the destruction red blood cells, thereby causing serious medical issues like, anemia. In many foods, onion powder is added discreetly and it can prove to be harmful. Onion powder is also found in many packaged meals and baby food. Thus, when buying pet food, be very careful and check the ingredients of the food.

We all are aware of the fact that raisins are healthy and highly delicious snack, but it is a fact that these raisins are quite beneficial for the human beings but quite poisonous for your feline friend. If the cats are fed with raisins, they may even suffer from sudden kidney failure problems. Thus, you must not feed your cats with grapes or raisins and if they eat them accidentally, you must keep on checking them regularly to see if there are any signs of toxicity. These signs can be lack of appetite, diarrhea, weakness, lethargy, decreased urination and abdominal pain.

Garlic is also highly harmful for the cats and as it belongs to the onion family, the same danger is associated with garlic, albeit in a more pronounced way as the toxins are more concentrated in garlic.

We have heard a lot about the advantages of consuming raw eggs. Though, it may be beneficial for us, it may prove to be harmful for our lovely cats. This is because of the high risk of E Coli or Salmonella in the raw eggs that can prove to be quite risky to their health. Moreover, avidin is contained in egg whites that hamper the absorption of Vitamin B.

5. Alcohol

Although, you may not give alcohol knowingly to your cat, but if it does slurps a little when your drink is unattended, it may result in alcohol poisoning and intoxication.

Drinks like coffee and any other drink containing caffeine may prove to be harmful for your feline companion. It may cause severe dehydration in them as caffeine has diuretic effects. It also results in stimulation of the nervous system and heart.

Chocolate is also highly dangerous for your cat as it contains theobromine. This is basically a chemical which may have a lot of harmful effects on the health of your cat.

While feeding a little fat once in a while to your cat is good, but its excess may be responsible for many negative impacts on its health, like diarrohea. The cat may also suffer from various other stomach troubles and vomiting, particularly if you feed your cat with uncooked fat.

You must not feed your cat with bones as it may get fragmented while cooking and result in bowel obstructions or internal lacerations. If you feed raw bones to them, it may prove to be a choking hazard for your lovely cat.

As your feline friends grow up, they become increasingly lactose intolerant. Their bodies are unable to breakdown lactose and this may result in uncontrolled diarrohea. If the cat gets too sick, it may also suffer from dehydration that can complicate health situation. Thus, cats must not be given milk or cream or look for options that are lactose free.
