Can Dogs Eat Walnuts?

Walnuts are fine for your dog, if he eats a bit of a crushed one. Fresh walnuts are high in protein and omega oils and good for most of the dogs. But, some dogs may not tolerate nuts very well and can vomit, get hives or have diarrhea. You can see if your canine companion tolerates the walnuts by feeing a small piece. You should never feed ‘Macadamia Nuts’ to your dog, as it can cause weakness or partial paralysis in the hindquarters of dogs. In addition to this, you should also aware of other foods that are toxic for dogs.

Do not give walnuts to your dog in large quantity because it may be toxic for your dog. When your dog eats moist, old, moldy walnuts, not fresh ones from the ground or the market then walnut poisoning may be caused. Signs of poisoning can resemble the quivering of metaldehyde poisoning from eating pellets or snail bait powder.

The treatment of walnut poisoning is to induce vomiting, administer muscle relaxants, charcoal, and tranquilizers. If your pooch is quivering but standing and alert, then a couple tablespoons of 2% hydrogen peroxide may cause vomiting of the snail bait or moldy nuts. Remember that the sooner you get rid of these toxins, the less absorbed. You do not want to do this to a sick, depressed, recumbent dog. Because they could inhale vomit and develop pneumonia or die.
