Labrador Ear Problems

Labrador retrievers have floppy ears, therefore, these dogs are more prone to having infections of ears. It is always a good idea to check your Labrador for any sign of ear discomfort. Some symptoms of ear problem in your pooch include:

  • Excessive shaking of head
  • Irritability
  • Scratching the ear
  • Bad odor in ears

Problems that may occur in Labrador ears are:

1.Allergies

Allergies can cause the problems in ears. These allergies can be managed. Some food allergies are discovered through the process of elimination. But, other allergies can be harder to detect or deal with.

2.Infestations

The floppy ears of labs produce a moist and warm environment for the small organisms. Some common infestations in these dogs include yeast, mites, and bacteria. Ear mites look like dark brown droppings, bacterial infestation will usually produce an off-white discharge and yeast infections have an odorous brownish discharge. In order to prevent infestation problems, you can trim ear hairs short and keep the moisture to a minimum level in your dog’s ear.

3.Other ear problems

The matter of hair, water, or plant can end up becoming lodged in a Labrador’s ear. If these objects are not easily reached, you should take your dog to a vet. Furthermore, some Labradors may have hereditary diseases like tumors or hormonal abnormalities like hypothyroidism. In these cases veterinary doctor will administer medication.
