Why Do Dogs Sleep So Much?

Have you ever wondered why your dog sleeps so much or worried that he is lazy?  This article will explain you the sleeping habits of our canine companion.

The dogs sleep more than human beings do, but at the same time they wake up more recurrently than humans do. The extent of your dog’s sleep depends on:

  • The level of activity- A dog living in home as a pet sleeps more than a dog that works like a search and rescue dog, or a dog working on a farm.
  • Type of dog breed- The larger breeds need a bit more sleep than smaller breeds
  • Their growth stage- You will also find that the growing pup need more nap time, and they will snooze for anything up to 16 hours in a day.

Is your dog healthy?

If you are worried that your dog may not well because he is sleeping too much, then you should ask yourself following questions:

  • Is he sleeping more than he was last week?
  • Has he always slept this much?
  • Is he bright and bouncy when he is awake?
  • Has he any appetite problem?
  • Does he seem lethargic?

If your dog eats well and is full of energy after excessive sleeping, it is unlikely that he has any problem.  It is just what dogs do. But, if the sleeping patterns of your dog has changed recently, and if his appetite is poor and he seems lacking in energy, you should get him checked.
