Toy and Small Breeds, contrary to the popular belief require a high protein diet and more calories than a large breed dog on a kilo to kilo basis. Their daily calorie requirements are higher due to higher surface area to the body mass ratio when compared with their bigger brethren. These little wonders even have a higher metabolism rate that allows them to burn food at a faster level than the large dog breeds. Special attention must be given to mini breed puppies, because of a higher metabolism rate their system processes the food very fast and it becomes vital to give them frequent calorie intakes. A calorie deficit in small puppies diet may make them prone to hypoglecima which results in weakness and lethargy, as it is commonly observed.

What to look for while buying dry dog food for small/mini dog breeds?

A good small or mini breed dog food must have a high calorie concentration /gm. To cite an example, if a 25 kg adult dog needs on an average 2250 calories [Kcal] per day to stay healthy, vis a vis a 7 Kg Apso adult may need as much as 4000 calories [Kcal] per day and even more for  a few other small and toy dog breeds

As always, please ensure that a good quality protein source is used in the food bag and with most good dog food brands it is normally the first ingredient given on the composition table. Whole protein sources are a clear preference here over the proteins derived from the poultry/chicken by products.

When choosing kibble for your small or mini breed dog, ensure that right size is used as a bigger kibble may cause dental issues and in some cases may even make the dog uninterested in the food.

Please find below some general guidance issued with the most popular dog food brands and with their best dry dog food variants for the mini and small breed dogs in India.
